THE WESTERN PROVINCE VETERANS OPEN
15 TO 18 JANUARY 2010

The Western Province Veterans Open tournament is traditionally held the weekend before school starts. We have many teachers participating and also most of the players are then back from holiday for their children to be back at school. Unfortunately, because of 2010 soccer, the government decided to close all schools during the FIFA world soccer and to start the school term a week earlier in January. This played havoc. Most teachers could leave early on the Friday, which was the start of the tournament, but could not get leave for the whole day on Monday. We therefore had quite a few "walk-overs". Other "walk-overs" were due to hard fought matches in the semi's and some unfit players pulling muscles and cramping!!
The standard was extremely high this year with many new young players participating. David Adams celebrated his 40th birthday by winning his section. David Nainkin also wanted to enter, but missed the entry by one day. It would be wonderful to see some of the other ex springbok and Davis Cup tennis players participating.
The stands at Rondebosch were full on Saturday and Sunday, so wonderful to see the interest, especially with the matches played by David Adams.
