REPORT ON THE 2010 ITF SAVTA NATIONALS
|
Venues:
Western Province Tennis Headquarters (Rondebosch) Kelvin Grove Tennis Club
University of Cape Town Tennis Club
Dates: 06-10 March 2010
Sponsors:
Sadly no sponsors obtained. ABSA and Nashua were approached but had to turn us down.
Thank you Brad and Brett Summers from Wilson for your help - much appreciated.
Hopefully 2011 will see an improvement to the economic climate and sponsors will again be available.
Preamble:
A total of 320 players entered the tournament, but by the time play got under way on Saturday we had 10 withdrawals.
Social side:
Friday - and a very pleasant evening was organized at the Italian Club where good food was the order of the day although, due to the large numbers at the Club, the service was not good at all. However, the music made up for it and plenty of the vets were able to loosen up on the dance floor before play started in earnest on Saturday morning.
General:
Play got under way on Saturday morning at 07:45 in very warm conditions. The hot weather continued to escalate and by Monday was unbearable. Having chatted to Ian Smith, CEO of SATA, the Tournament Doctor, Gert Meyer, and our Referee Japie Klaasen, it was agreed to suspend play on Monday until 16:00. Before this could kick in a number of players had retired from their singles matches. The suspended play came as a welcome relief to all.
We would like to thank all the players who took time out to go to Cape Town and play the tournament. We hope that it was all worth while. A special word of thanks goes out to Birgitte our lady from Denmark who was very happy to have made the decision to come to Cape Town. Birgitte was simply over awed by the beauty of Cape Town, the absolute friendliness shown to her by all she came into contact with and the super tennis she was able to play. Thank you Yvonne for all you did to make Birgitte's stay a happy one - she will be back.
We would also like to welcome Mervin Watson back to Cape Town, South Africa, where he has decided to retire after living in Canada for many, many years. It is good to have you back Mervin and we hope that the decision turns out to be really good for you.
Our triple champions are listed below and to them we say "well done" - it is truly a good effort - especially in the extreme weather conditions.
