2010 East Cape Town Veterans Open 5, 6 and 7 June 2010
|
Veteran tennis players from as far afield as Gauteng Central, KZN, Free State, EP and Western Province as well as a large contingent from Border converged in East London for the East Cape Open Veterans' championships in June.
Border players featured in all but five of the 30 finals, winning no fewer than 20 titles.
Craig Newton of King William's Town and East London's Veronique Luksich won triple crowns in the 45+ and Open division respectively.
The longest match on the final day was that between Newton and Gary Cadle where Newton squeezed through registering a 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 win.
The Open men's final produced excellent, hard-hitting tennis. In a humdinger 17-year-old Marlu Jansen van Vuuren beat Queenstown's Llewellyn King 7-6, 6-3.
Archie Rudman, 54, chose to play in the 35+ age group. In winning the title, he gave the youngsters a tennis lesson in singles play.
East London's Jeremy Drake captured the 40+ title overwhelming Hansie Swanepoel of Free State 6-1, 6-2.
The two women's finals in the oldest age groups proved to be marathon affairs, both lasting well over two hours.
In the 55-60+ division, Alta Brand of Free State came from a 2-5 deficit in the final set to defeat Gauteng Central's Leonie Grondel
1-6, 6-4, 7-5. After causing an upset by defeating Barbara Rose-Innes in the semi-final, the fourth-seeded Marie van Rensburg captured the 65-70+ title beating the top seed, Joan Sephton, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
The only other upset that occurred was in the 45+ women's section where Heloise Botha beat the second seed, Anna-Mari Mare 6-2, 6-1.
Claude Moonieyan won the 55+ division causing two upsets when he beat EP's top-seeded Danie Botha in the first round and Siphiwe Sibiya, the second seed, in the final.
The tournament was hailed by the players as the best of the provincial tournaments with the organising committee receiving well-deserved accolades. It was ably run by the husband-and-wife team of CP and Alta Brand of Free State.
