SA Tennis Juniors Fight for Places at NJT International Masters
|
Cape Town - Four South Africa junior tennis players will be on their way to Club Med Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic from October 13 to 20 to contest the Nike Junior Tour (NJT) International Masters.
All they have to do is win their respective sections at the NJT SA Masters to be played at the Recreation Tennis Club in Somerset West from Thursday to Sunday.
The tournament is open to Under-14 and Under-12 boys and girls and the participants in this event have earned their places by garnering points at a number of tournaments played countrywide during the year.
Three of the players will attempt to book their second appearances at the International Masters. Wayne Montgomery and Kay-Leigh Nicholas represented South Africa in the Under-12 section at Torino, Italy in 2007 while Ilze Hattingh played in last year's event at Club Med Sandpiper in Florida, USA.
The 26 countries participating this year are Argentina, Belarus, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Morocco, Netherlands, Russia, Serbia, Slovak Republic, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates (UAE), United Kingdom and USA.
Belarus, Morocco, Serbia and the UAE will be making their first appearances at the NJT International Masters while The Netherlands will be returning after a long absence.
The Nike Junior Tour began in 1997 and players who went through the ranks are starting to make their impression in world tennis. World No 2 Rafael Nadal won this tournament on three occasions; Robin Soderling of Sweden was the boy's Under-14 top seed at Stuttgart in 1998 while Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina was the Under-12 finalist at Sun City in 2000.
